BRIAN’S 100 BEST ’19: CLAM CHOWDER at BAR WAYŌ

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2019…

The restaurant scene at the South Street Seaport is changing. Case in point is one of the new Momofuku’s to open. Bar Wayō is a destination bar with creative bites. The best thing I tried at lunch was a surprising clam chowder. They don’t serve the typical creamy New England variety, but rather the clear kind you find in Rhode Island. Briny and salty, the soup is smooth and warming with smoky bacon, hearty potato chunks, and a subtle hint of dashi. Price: $14
