DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Chocolate Shaved Ice at KREUTHER HANDCRAFTED CHOCOLATE

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

SADLY, KREUTHER HANDCRAFTED CHOCOLATES IS NOW CLOSED.

Last week I wrote about a delicious little dessert secret known as the Cake Pusher. It was my birthday week and I felt cake was more than necessary.

It’s rare I write about dessert two weeks in a row but it’s the end of summer and this special frozen treat you’re about to read about will only be available for another few weeks. And it’s something definitely not to miss.

Last year, I raved about the exciting high-end chocolates at Kreuther Handcrafted Chocolate just across from Bryant Park. Well, recently when I was at the shop ogling over the amazing truffles and macarons, I noticed a sign advertising a summer special. Shaved Chocolate Ice. I was more than intrigued.

It takes a few minutes to prepare but when it’s presented it is pure magic and worth the wait. It’s topped with a choice of mango, raspberry, or praline sauce. But what is it exactly?

This cup of chocolate frozen shards sits somewhere between a sorbet and a semifreddo. It’s not exactly frozen solid but the cold richness seems to come together as your mouth warms it up. It’s playful, decadent, and perfect for a hot summer day. And we’ve been having a lot of them.

The weather in New York has been pretty oppressively hot as of late and I can’t think of a better remedy than this unique and luxurious frozen treat. Price: $5
