DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Savory Soy Milk with Yo Tiao at HO FOODS

In a neighborhood over-run with bacon egg and cheese sandwiches, it’s nice to have a unique, alternative breakfast option. The long-time favorite Taiwanese haunt Ho Foods (which has expanded since I first visited in 2018) serves a special breakfast menu on Thursday-Sunday. And it’s worth seeking out!

A warming bowl of Savory Soy Milk with Yo Tiao (fried fritters) holds nuggets of texture and flavor, including chunks of crispy fried fritters called Yo Tiao, as crunchy and decadent as thick-cut bacon. The soy milk, served warm, starts to separate so bits of curds give a pleasant chewiness and a tangy nutty flavor. Drizzles of chili oil and garnishes of scallions are enough to wake anybody up. What a breakfast! Price: $14
