DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Zorba Plate at BABY BLUES LUNCHEONETTE

A Greek diner is all too common around the tri-state area. But a modern hipster Greek diner? That is something different.

Baby Blues Luncheonette is a very cool local Williamsburg hang-out that opened in 2022 and has been a super fun hangout, especially for breakfast.

I found the prices a bit high, but the food and the retro relaxed ambiance, with an ever playing 80’s television with an entire collection of VHS tapes available for sampling, totally worth it.

There are showier dishes on the menu like Baklava Banana Bread and HLT sandwich (halloumi, lettuce, and tomatoes), but I wanted a hearty traditional breakfast and the Zorba Plate more than filled my craving.

This cramped plate came out sort of messy, but had the vegetarian kitchen sink on it. I actually appreciated that there were no large sausage or bacon slabs. Instead, the salty, squeaky grilled halloumi stood in and added enough cholesterol. The orange eggs were expertly cooked and seasoned and along with the cheese, were the richest thing on the plate.

Just as flavorful were the Greek potatoes, refreshing bright yellow tomatoes, and the mint-spiked tzatziki. It really felt like this hit all the flavors of a perfect savory morning meal.

That’s the kind of thing you want at a diner – be it hipster, traditional, Greek, or all three. Price: $20
