Welcome to a new segment on this blog. On Mondays get ready for a quick list of the best restaurants, dishes, or food trends in a certain category. There are so many great things to eat and drink in the city and think of this as your resource to find the absolute best.

If you look around the city this week, it seems that every bar wants to be German. Blue and white flags are everywhere, waitresses wear traditional garb are outside taking a smoke break, and the faint sound of an oompah band can be heard on just about any street.

It’s Oktoberfest! Perfect time to celebrate and soak up German culture. But make sure you find your way to an authentic German bar or restaurant and not get stuck at an Irish bar in disguise. Here are the seven best German bars in NYC (in no particular order): (more…)

My search for the best beer in New York continues….
It’s so cool is how tight-knit the local craft beer world is in New York. Most times when I see a unique can being sold, it’s actually a collaboration between breweries. Oftentimes it’s a brewery in Queens and the Bronx coming together, but for Taco Wednesday the breweries are practically neighbors. (more…)

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

First they did it with sodas, like Root Beer and Cream Soda. Now Coney Island Brewing Company has turned to famous cocktails to inspire their beers. The Hot Toddy is an unlikely beer style, but it works wonders. The strong ale (12.5% ABV) is fermented with honey, cinnamon, and lemons. It is then aged on whiskey barrel staves before being served hot or cold. Yes, it’s beer, but you’d be forgiven if you thought you were actually drinking a cocktail. .Price Varies.

Bronx Brewery is doing so many great things and have now been more ubiquitous around town. Their take on a double IPA is no joke – hitting on all cylinders with a number of different hop varietals playing together for different levels of hoppiness – grassy, fruity, piney, citrusy. It’s a well-rounded and uttely drinkable play on a new American style.

For Thanksgiving dessert, I popped open a bottle of Big Alice’s ambitious beer that is aged in used gin barrels. Granted this was a lot drier and more savory than I imagined with layers of sweetness and bold balanced acidity. Probably not the best beer to pair with dessert but when the beer is this good, I almost decided to forgo dessert and just drink this.

The brewery side of Dirck the Norseman has been consistently putting out bizzare creations that challenge the concept of beer. My favorite this year was this wonderfully roasty and super tart wheat beer that surprises with rich, woody coffee notes and a balancing lemon acidity. Price: $7
