My search for the best beer in New York continues….

This has all happened so fast. Regrettably, I have slacked off on staying up to date with the newest breweries opening in the city. And while I think I have some pretty good excuses (a new baby in my life), they have started opening at high speed.

When I started writing about local beer back in 2012, I decide to include breweries from Long Island and just north of the city since there were not quite enough to fill these spaces with NYC breweries alone. Well times have certainly changed.

In those five years we have more than tripled our brewery count. As of this writing, I believe there are 36 breweries across the five boroughs. And while I’ve been to at least half of them, it’s gotten harder and harder to keep up. Excuses, excuses. (more…)

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2017…

No, Rockaway’s Asparagus beer does not taste like asparagus. You never know with the crazy craft beer creations these days. But Rockaway focuses on more approachable and traditional beers. Despite the name, this session beer goes down very easy. It’s a full-on wheat beer with hints of lemon and pine bitterness. Very subtle, light, and too easy to drink. It’s good thing the ABV is only 3% – I can keep drinking this all day long. Not what most people say about asparagus itself.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

Maybe you’ve heard of this little Broadway show Hamilton. And maybe you’ve heard it’s impossible to get tickets. Well maybe the second best thing is to drink a beer made by Gun Hill Brewing with help from the cast of the musical.

It makes sense that the local brewery that would actually brew the beer is Gun Hill Brewing Company. Of all our local breweries, they are the ones most connected to our Revolutionary past. Their name even takes itself from a nearby street that was a site of a Revolutionary Battle.

Rise Up Rye is a reference to a recurring song in the musical. And as you can imagine, it is a rye, which might be similar to the beer consumed in New York during Hamilton’s lifetime.

Welcome to a new segment on this blog. On Mondays get ready for a quick list of the best restaurants, dishes, or food trends in a certain category. There are so many great things to eat and drink in the city and think of this as your resource to find the absolute best.

If you look around the city this week, it seems that every bar wants to be German. Blue and white flags are everywhere, waitresses wear traditional garb are outside taking a smoke break, and the faint sound of an oompah band can be heard on just about any street.

It’s Oktoberfest! Perfect time to celebrate and soak up German culture. But make sure you find your way to an authentic German bar or restaurant and not get stuck at an Irish bar in disguise. Here are the seven best German bars in NYC (in no particular order): (more…)

My search for the best beer in New York continues….
It’s so cool is how tight-knit the local craft beer world is in New York. Most times when I see a unique can being sold, it’s actually a collaboration between breweries. Oftentimes it’s a brewery in Queens and the Bronx coming together, but for Taco Wednesday the breweries are practically neighbors. (more…)

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

First they did it with sodas, like Root Beer and Cream Soda. Now Coney Island Brewing Company has turned to famous cocktails to inspire their beers. The Hot Toddy is an unlikely beer style, but it works wonders. The strong ale (12.5% ABV) is fermented with honey, cinnamon, and lemons. It is then aged on whiskey barrel staves before being served hot or cold. Yes, it’s beer, but you’d be forgiven if you thought you were actually drinking a cocktail. .Price Varies.
