I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2016…

First they did it with sodas, like Root Beer and Cream Soda. Now Coney Island Brewing Company has turned to famous cocktails to inspire their beers. The Hot Toddy is an unlikely beer style, but it works wonders. The strong ale (12.5% ABV) is fermented with honey, cinnamon, and lemons. It is then aged on whiskey barrel staves before being served hot or cold. Yes, it’s beer, but you’d be forgiven if you thought you were actually drinking a cocktail. .Price Varies.

Bronx Brewery is doing so many great things and have now been more ubiquitous around town. Their take on a double IPA is no joke – hitting on all cylinders with a number of different hop varietals playing together for different levels of hoppiness – grassy, fruity, piney, citrusy. It’s a well-rounded and uttely drinkable play on a new American style.

For Thanksgiving dessert, I popped open a bottle of Big Alice’s ambitious beer that is aged in used gin barrels. Granted this was a lot drier and more savory than I imagined with layers of sweetness and bold balanced acidity. Probably not the best beer to pair with dessert but when the beer is this good, I almost decided to forgo dessert and just drink this.

The brewery side of Dirck the Norseman has been consistently putting out bizzare creations that challenge the concept of beer. My favorite this year was this wonderfully roasty and super tart wheat beer that surprises with rich, woody coffee notes and a balancing lemon acidity. Price: $7

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

img_0681 I’m doing something I’ve never done before on this blog. And that’s because I just came back from an adventure that was unlike anything I’ve ever done before in my life. For six weeks of the summer, I was travelling around Europe meeting wonderful locals and eating amazing food. And I got paid for it!!

The real reason I was there was to make videos on some Urban Adventure tours. Stay tuned for 14 new episodes of Locals Know. But until then, to whet your appetite (and for me to re-live my incredible dream-come-true journey), I’ve decided to document the food I ate in each city.

So instead of picking just one dish of the week this week, I’m going to pick 14 – one for each city I visited.

My search for the best beer in New York continues….

PAULANER, 265 Bowery (between Houston Street and Stanton Street), Lower East Side

People look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them they can go to the Paulaner brewery on the Lower East Side. Anybody who knows much about beer, history, or Germany can tell you that Paulaner Brewery is an historic Munich brewery opened by monks in the 17th century. It’s one of the gathering points every year for the famous Oktoberfest.

Tank to Glass

But more recently, the Paulaner brand has expanded across the world opening up brewpubs in places like Singapore and Moscow. Its first US location opened about three years ago in New York right on the Bowery, which is notable since this was the old Kleindeutschland (little Germany) neighborhood from the 1800’s

In the Middle of the Bar

Many people might walk by this German beer hall and mistake it for a typical sports bar. But you might notice all the brewing equipment and then discover there is wonderful, authentic German pub food available and the brewmaster Andreas Heidenreich is brewing the freshest lagers every single day right on premises.
