DISH OF THE WEEK: Biscuits at DALEVIEW BISCUITS AND BEER

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I am definitely not complaining, but I can’t figure out Daleview Biscuits and Beer. I get the pairing of rich buttery Southern food with hoppy malty crisp beers. They make sense together. The part that confuses me is the gluten free aspect.

See, the biscuits and all their food is completely gluten free. That’s pretty awesome. But then they sell beer that they brew themselves and that is completely loaded with gluten. I applaud both sides of the business, but just wonder how they ended up together.

I guess my question is really why the biscuits ended up being gluten free when the people behind the business are clearly not.

It might actually be because the recipe they discovered that make these biscuits so darn good just coincidentally doesn’t have gluten. And why not use that as a marketing tool?

Turns out the truth is the owner’s wife is gluten free and inspired the recipe. Sounds like a similar story to mine. My wife is gluten free and I’m a beer lover so that is really how we found ourselves here before an outing to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens a few weeks ago.

We had a satisfying and friendly brunch and were very happy to be supporting a local Black owned business.

There are all sorts of things you can put inside the biscuits from tender (and also gluten free) fried chicken to pimento cheese to lots of crisp bacon. We had the Haven which incorporates a lot of these ingredients and was very satisfying.

But the biscuit itself stole the show – didn’t matter what you put inside. I never would have in a million years guessed that this browned flaky buttery goodness was made without gluten. It’s really quite surprising and exciting.

And while some who visit Daleview for a meal might not be excited by this, I am very happy to know I can down it all with a homemade gluten-full beer. Price: $4-$14
