Beer DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Hammock Locked from KILLS BORO BREWING CO.

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

As you may have seen, I have a brand new project that I must admit I am putting a good deal of my energy into. You should check it out. It has nothing to do with this post.

Except to let you know that this post almost didn’t happen. I have been running the Dish of the Week segment on this blog since 2013. That is a long time and it is very dear to my heart. But, of course, the big problem is I am not eating out in New York nearly as much as I used to. I do hope that changes soon, but the world has some big question marks right now.

So the future of this part of the blog is very uncertain. Since this is the first week of 2021, I thought this could be a good time to retire it.

But then I realized, I do still have a few great things to write about. And more may be on the horizon, so until that changes, I’ll feature some things I’ve loved.

The first one is an alcoholic drink that totally surprised me.

I’m still very committed to exploring and drinking beer from New York City’s local breweries. I have stockpiled many cans and am enjoying them during this dark time.

One that I popped open recently brought me back to bright sunshine and it’s a brewery that I had heard about for a while but never had the pleasure to try.

Kills Boro was the third brewery to open in Staten Island and I planned to make my way out there one day. After trying their Hammock Locked, I wish that could happen sooner than later.

I’ve noticed that Coconut IPAs have become a thing with local craft breweries. I wasn’t expecting much since those sweet fruit laced IPAs don’t always work for me. But this one was great. The golden creamy ale was double dry hopped and super aromatic with sweet coconut on the nose and a background of more tart tropical fruits.

When sipping it, the coconut is more subtle (but pleasantly present) and played beautifully with the pineapple and citrus notes. It drinks very smooth without too strong of a bitter quality but still noticeable hops presence. The ABV is listed at 7% but it didn’t feel anywhere near that since it was dangerously easy to drink.

I hope this makes you want to seek this beer out because it’s worth it. And I hope I can tell you about many more delicious things to eat and drink around the city. Stay tuned.
