DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Silky Tofu Pudding at 46 MOTT

The Place: 46 is not the number the kids were going crazy for last year (that was 6-7), but maybe it should have been. This unassuming little shop (46 Mott) is almost like a Chinese bodega selling homemade Cantonese pastries, snacks, and frozen food. It’s a great place to stop by to look around and try something you’ve never heard of before (herb jelly anyone?).

The Dish: I’ve picked up a few treats here and there that have all been very enjoyable, but I keep coming back to the warm homemade Tofu Pudding. The warm pudding is so fresh and silky and tastes like smooth mild dairy. The brown syrup gives it a nutty toasty flavor that adds just a hint of sweetness. It’s a fantastic breakfast or a light dessert. It’s almost impossible for me to walk by this Chinatown gem without getting myself a very affordable cup. Price: $3/$5
