DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: The Breakfast Sandwich at AMANDA’S GOOD MORNING CAFÉ

The Place: I’ve mostly missed the pop-up phenomenon that started during COVID as I no longer have the time and patience to handle insane wait times and special instructions.

However, I was very happy to experience Amanda’s Good Morning Café, which seems to have turned into a sort of permanent pop-up. Certain mornings of the week, Chef Amanda Perdomo and her team transform the Cajun seafood bar Strange Delight into a café with pastries and comfort breakfast food. Turns out that Chef Perdomo will be leaving NYC for New Orleans soon, but this pop-up will continue to pop-up and here’s hoping the food stays the same.

The Dish: A few weeks back I got to enjoy the Breakfast Sandwich, which seems to be my go-to order at breakfast cafés like this. A soft moist egg loaf is the main event here but it’s the creative additional ingredients that make this something really special, including a generous helping of sweet and spicy pepper jam, peppery crisp watercress, and a provolone that melts like butter. You could choose to order this with braised bacon which is essentially fatty and smoked pork belly. I didn’t think it was necessary but if that’s your thing, it’s the real deal.  The sandwich all comes together on their springy homemade sesame bun. While I sat there stuffing my face, I couldn’t help but steal peeks (and smells) of the morning pastries coming out of the oven. That was another experience that made me certain this is a pop-up with lasting power. Price: $11, $15 (with bacon)
