DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Blejska Kremšnita (Bled Cream Cake) at ZIMA SLAŠČIČARNA in Bled, Slovenia

After exploring the absolutely breathtaking (and crowded) Lake Bled, I knew there was one more thing to do before heading back to Ljubljana. We needed to try some cakes.

Given Slovenia’s proximity to Austria, it’s no surprise that just about each town has their own cake. We had to seek out Zima (which means “the Bear” in Slovenian) for their array of confections. I would have stuck to the more traditional Slovenian options (like potica or grmada), but since I was traveling with my son and nieces, I had to give each of them a chance to pick something.

Of course the chocolate and marshmallow ones caught their eye, but I also forced everybody to try at least a bite of the iconic Kremšnita or “cream cake” of Bled. Everybody thanked me.

This beaut is truly a slice of heaven. Impeccable crispy puff pastry sandwiches two layers of cream: an eggy bouncy custard topped with a layer of silky sweet whipped cream.

I mean, despite no chocolate, what is not to love here?

I had been dreaming of this cake since we started planning our trip and it did not disappoint for a single second. Wait – what castle??
