DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Sel Roti at NEPALI BHANCHHA GHAR

During a morning trip to Queens, I found Neapli Bhanchha Ghar open early and so I snuck in for some Himalayan pites. This place has been well-known in the borough for a number of years and in fact, I realized I too had been here but didn’t take good note of the name.

That’s ok because the second time it has stuck. And while it is a bit difficult for me to pronounce, I won’t be forgetting it any time soon.

I ordered the obligatory Tibetan dumplings known as momos, but made sure to try the jhol version, which features the thick skinned beef-stuffed dumplings in a light aromatic tomato curry soup. They are fantastic and could have easily been the dish I featured this week.

However, the Sel Roti was on another level and while I refrained from stuffing every last momo in my face, I couldn’t resist devouring the entirety of this large fritter.

Sel Roti is a round fried doughnut made from rice flour, which gives the ring a light chewy texture to marry with the salty, slightly sweet flavor.

It was fresh and rather greaseless made only even more addicting from the spicy tangy dipping sauce.

Whether this meal is intended from breakfast or not, both of these Nepalese carb treats started my day on a very delicious note. Price: $1.50
