DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Thai Basil Cucumber Pop at THISBOWL

THE PLACE: ThisBowl is still as trendy as ever and recently expanded to a second location in Nomad. I predicted them to be the best Sweetgreen a few months back when I wrote about their fresh and flavorful salads, and still stand by that. Although there is something that feels a bit less corporate about this place for now, so it might be a little while before we find them in shopping malls in Massachusetts, but don’t be surprised if it happens.

THE MENU: I already wrote about their bowls and they will do in a pinch. I will say that I’ve found them a bit more hit or miss lately than when I first discovered them. Not sure if I’ve gotten tired of their predictable flavor combinations, or if the quality has slipped just a tad. I still think it’s a good healthy spot, if you can deal with the crowds.

THE DISH: What I did recently discover that excited me almost more than the salads are the seasonal housemade soda pops. They swear they’re low sugar made with fresh ingredients, so I will have to take their word for it. Regardless of if the refreshing drink cancels out the salad or not, I was excited by the flavors. The one that really won me over was the Thai Basil Cucumber which was a unique combination where both ingredients marry well and hold up to each other. It certainly was not too sweet and the flavors were far from artificial. If you’re not a salad person, maybe you’re a soda person and these deserve your attention. If you’re both, well it’s only a matter of time before there are ThisBowls around the country, so you’ll be all set. Price: $22
