DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Sweet Turnip Sambal at SUNDAY C&C EATERY

My yearly resolution for some time now has been to eat less meat. I’m not ready to go full vegan (but wouldn’t be surprised if I find myself there in the future), yet I am eager and more than willing to try as many of the plant-based New York food businesses as possible.

I recently accidentally stumbled upon Sunday C&C Eatery nestled inside the strange outdoor Bowery Market. I was really looking for something quick and healthy and found it in spades.

The vegan menu has unique influences from Indian and Latin American cuisine with vegan creations I have never seen before. I couldn’t really imagine what the Sweet Turnip Sambal would be like but the menu called it “sweet, spicy, and addicting” so I was game.

There was no fake chicken or soy nuggets here. When they say to eat more plants, this is what they mean.

Chef Christian Torres plates each dish to order and it reminded me of peering in at a chef’s table. He also has a way with vegetables. The plump turnips were indeed as naturally sweet as advertised and they were plated alongside seared earthy mushrooms. Slathered among the veggies was a spicy and rich sambal sauce that brought another layer to the party.

And then fresh cilantro and basil finished off the dish.

It was a very unlikely spot for such a refined vegan dish, but that is certainly part of its charm. If this is what my New Year’s resolution can bring, it won’t be that hard to keep it up all year long. Price: $16
