DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Quesadillas de Hongos y Nopales at CAFÉ MIGUEL

In the last few years, there are lots of new little cafés in the city that give the sense and vibe of Mexico City. It seems like this is a new trend or perhaps I just started noticing them now that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting CDMX shortly before the pandemic.

Café Miguel is definitely a new addition that recently opened on a Williamsburg street I used to frequent regularly. Some may mistake it for a typical local coffee shop, but it does indeed transport you to another metropolis south of the border.

The focus is corn (maiz) in many forms and you can pair the homemade tetales, sopes, and quesadillas with coffees brewed from Mexican beans.

My quesadilla came stuffed with meaty oyster mushrooms (hongos) and blistered tangy cactus (nopales). The combination is superb and is only enhanced by the addition of the melty rich queso blanco. It’s hidden well beneath the crisped housemade corn tortilla that tastes and feels like it was just pressed.

And then on the side, I got some beautiful sauces (salsa macha and salsa verde) that I was tempted to sip like coffee. As tempted as I was, I restrained myself since that is not something they do in Mexico City. Price: $11
