DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Chuck Bettis Breakfast Sandwich at SUPERIORITY BURGER

In their old space, I think I may have worked my way through Superiority Burger’s menu of inventive vegetarian fast food. I’m a bit ashamed that I hadn’t been able to visit them in their new location until now.

This spring, they came back in a much larger space (with wait staff) in an old neighborhood diner that sadly closed. Superiority Burger is the right business to be in this space.

I stopped by for brunch, since I’m rarely the East Village in the evenings anymore. But I’m glad I did because it allowed me to try their take on a breakfast burger.

Thanks to Google, I discovered Chuck Bettis is an experimental musician. I have no idea why this breakfast sandwich is named for him – I can only guess he is a friend of the owner (Brooks Hadley). Or perhaps the composition of the unlikely sandwich relates to his musical sensibilities. No idea.

This breakfast sandwich on a plump potato bun mainly focuses on a cumin-laced “chorizo” patty and a glob of sautéed spinach spiked with chili. There is no egg component, but the fake cheese provides an almost mayo-like richness that negates the need for any egg substitute.

Normally, a non-vegetarian sandwich like this with a spiced heart-stopping sausage patty might cause me to stop from devouring the entire thing because I know I would suffer from some heartburn or acid reflux or both. I felt a bit less guilty devouring this completely because it’s vegetarian.

And while I’m sure this delicious gutbomb is less healthy than you might think, it did not give me any physical pain later on, which I appreciate in spades.

Add one more Superiority Burger creation to my list of top dishes. I can’t wait for my next visit and my next discovery. Price: $16
