One of my favorite parts of vacations in Mexico, aside from the beach, mezcal, and the ability to practice Spanish, is the breakfast at the hotels. Without fail, we are offered a plate of what some might call nachos. In reality, these are chilaquiles and they are a great way to eat chips for breakfast.
La Chilaquería is a new Mexican café that specializes in that breakfast specialty. And it is in the unlikeliest of places, among the flowers and plants of the stretch of Manhattan known as the Flower District.
You almost need to know this place is here not but once you discover it, you’re transported to a little hip spot in Mexico City.
For breakfast, they offer our different chilaquiles options with a range of toppings and sauces. There is rojo (red), verde (green) and a combination. What really intrigued me was the fourth option which is not a color, but rather a nut – almendrados (or almond).
The sauce is the star of the show, but a softly cooked egg, jalapeños, onions, queso fresco and a nice hit of cilantro make up a hefty crunchy breakfast. A bit more expensive than those Mexico hotel buffets, but quite a savings on a plane ticket. Price: $18
