DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Guava y Queso Empanada at GUEVARA’S

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Guevara’s feels as new modern Brooklyn as it gets. It’s a vegan Mexican-inspired all day café (from the folks behind Mekelburgs) but it’s also a coffee shop, grocery and plant store!!! They take the plant diet to a whole new level. Pick up some plants while eating plants!

I stopped by this new neighborhood spot a few times in the last month or so. Their menu is pretty affordable (nothing is more than $10) and heavy on the breakfast and lunch items. There are a few pastries and doughnuts that are tempting along with some gazpachos and sandwiches.

I had to see what the fuss was all about when it came to their Torta Milanesa, which was a cutlet of fried eggplant rather than chicken or veal. It was hefty and crunchy and pretty satisfying. I also was intrigued by their vegan BEC (which I will save for another blog post). But my favorite thing here was a simple empanada.

They offer quite a few stuffed pockets including Garbanzo, Corn y Poblano, and Egg & Cheese. But I couldn’t resist the Guava y Queso.

This is a classic Cuban combo but again here everything is vegan. You would never know the tangy creamy concoction alongside the sweet guava filling wasn’t real dairy cream cheese. It was pretty magical. And it all burst out of a hot crunchy fried exterior that made for a cheap, satisfying, and totally Brooklyn experience. Price: $4 or 2 for $7
