BRIAN’S 100 BEST ’19: KINILAW at TSISMIS

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2019…

Usually when someone suggests ordering ceviche, they are either at a Mexican or Peruvian restaurant. But almost definitely Latin American. I had no idea that Filipino’s had their own version of the marinated raw fish called Kinilaw. I discovered at the very exciting new Filipino gastropub Tsismis. The variety changes but I was lucky enough to encounter meaty sweet bay scallops marinated in sour calamansi juice, some coconut milk, plenty of chile, vinegar, and a topping of their signature mango salsa. It was tropical, sour, sweet, spicy, and utterly surprising. Price: $8
