DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Soft Pretzel at MILLER’S TWIST

THE PLACE: The well-loved Miller’s Twist sits towards the back of the iconic Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. For those unfamiliar with the market, it is one of those over-run tourist places that somehow is also beloved by locals. The same seems to hold true for this pretzel vendor that started in the market in 1999.

THE MENU: Last week I wrote about an excellent Mexican restaurant in Philly that would fit in any cosmopolitan city in the country. Miller’s Twist could as well, of course, but this food business sticks a bit closer to Philadelphia and Pennsylvania’s roots of German immigration. Pretzels are by far one of the state’s iconic foods. Miller’s Twist makes soft pretzels in conservative flavors like Cinnamon and Garlic, but also stuffs their pretzels with gutbomb fillings like hot dogs, sausages, and of course, a cheesesteak.

THE DISH: The Regular Soft Pretzel is the perfect Philly snack – buttery, soft and fluffy. The restrained salt complements the butter and dough very nicely. It might not be the most classic version of a Philly pretzel, but it is oh so delicious. And with just a single pretzel, it also sets one up to continue eating around the cavernous market. Price: $3
