DISH OF THE WEEK: Toasted Coconut Cold Brew at CLEVER BLEND

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

This might be a controversial post. This might even bring about some angry comments. But I’m ready for that. I don’t think anyone will have issue with the drink I will be talking about, but some may balk at the coffee shop that created it.

When I randomly peeked my head into Clever Blend, a new coffee shop in the old Gorilla space in Park Slope, I was taken by their Toasted Coconut Cold Brew. It’s funny because I was walking around feeling both tired and thirsty. I was craving both a coffee and a coconut drink at the exact same time. Clever Blend seemed to answer my very specific desire.

I didn’t realize that this coffee shop was the center of some controversy over the last few weeks. I had read about a coffee shop in Brooklyn that put up a questionable sign on their bathroom door but didn’t realize that was here until after I tried and enjoyed their unique iced coffee.

 

I’m not going to talk to much about the sign (you can read about it here), but instead want to focus on the cold brew. I really enjoyed it despite any mistakes the owners of this shop may have made.

The cold brew comes out of the tap slightly creamy and just a bit sweet. The barista told me no milk or sugar is added yet instead some of the coconut meat and water is blended with the coffee for a smooth tropical sweet buzz.

I could tell maybe the coffee itself wasn’t the best coffee (I detected a slight burnt quality) but with the coconut flavor and body, it went down really easily.

And it hit the spot for me. It was exactly what I wanted and I had no idea it existed – until now. Ok, now bring on the angry comments. Price: $4.50-$5.25
