DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Jerk Chicken at PEPPA’S JERK CHICKEN RESTAURANT

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

If you search for Peppa’s in Brooklyn, there are no less than three places that show up. It took quite a bit of research for me to determine if these were all related.

Turns out they are all locations that stemmed from an original take-out storefront on Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. As they expanded to a newer location in Crown Heights, they updated their logo, launched a social media presence, and forgot to mention the other two locations.

I didn’t worry about any of this when I was in line at the original location waiting to try their famous jerk chicken.

The original Peppa’s seemed like one of those places that all the locals know about and there is a certain method to ordering and retrieving your food. It looked rather chaotic to me, but I watched what everyone else was doing, waited to be called on, and had my plan of attack.

I ended up with a large mound of their smoked and grilled jerk chicken.

The tender meat was succulent with charred bits and a slowly building heat that soaked into the soft flesh. On the side was their jerk sauce which contained even more tangy and potent heat.

It’s a somewhat undrsung jerk chicken in the city but one of the best. Don’t be surprised if by the time you search for this restaurant, a few more Peppa’s have sprouted up around Brooklyn. And I’m probably going to have to at some point try them all. Price: $16-$13
