DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Pandan Chiffon Cake at SIFT CAKES & COOKIES

The Place: If you spent much time in the FiDi, you know there are all these random little nooks and crannies and many of them are home to secret gems of bakeries, sandwich shops, or coffee bars. It might not be the city’s most exciting food neighborhood, but it has some of the city’s most exciting food surprises.

Sift is a teeny basement coffee shop and bakery with a focus on colorful Malaysian treats.

The Dish: The signature cake is the Pandan Chiffon Cake, which is so light and airy that I thought the to-go container was empty. Thankfully it contained this bright green cake with a strong aroma of pandan, which can be compared to a subtle floral, nutty vanilla. This cake is really light, bouncy, and perfect to pair with a coffee or a tea. It’s so light and airy, it was almost as if I didn’t take in any calories at all. Let’s pretend that’s true. Price: $6
