DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Pastéis de Nata at LISBONATA

I imagine most of us like to end (and start) the year with a little something sweet. And truly, from my time in Lisbon, I know the sweet eggy tarts known as pastel de nata don’t really need a special occassion. But since I recently got to try the playful versions at Libsonata in Crown Heights, I thought it was a fitting choice for my final dish of the week for 2025.

Natas were once notoriously difficult to find in the city, but now we have more than one bakery (including this one in Brooklyn) that specializes in the little treat. I tried both the original and the unique yuzu flavored. The bottom crust here is a bit thicker than I’m used to, but it had a crackly buttery texture which held up the creamy tangy rich custard inside. The citrusy yuzu spin was really unique and worked well. Something new, sweet and satisfying to start 2026. Here’s hoping for more like this in the New Year! Price: $9
