DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Khinkali at LALIKO

THE PLACE: Laliko sits on a corner storefront in the West Village that has seen lots of food concepts over the last few years. This stylish, modern Georgian restaurant has been here since last spring and I’m hoping it sticks around for at least a few more. They are one of a number of new Georgian restaurants in this neighborhood that is starting to become as known for this Eastern European cuisine as it is for pizza. I came by for lunch when there was a sparse mix of business people and couples. It seems like the place, decorated with colorful, modern murals, most likely comes alive in the evening when this could be a very fun and unique date or group outing.

THE MENU: As at most Georgian restaurants, the stars are the cheese boats known as Khachapuri and the Khinkali. But, of course, there is a deeper menu of tangy salads, grilled meats and unique stews. There is also a focus on Georgian wine. It seems the dishes here are a bit more elevated, modern chef-driven than your typical grandmother-run restaurant. For example, on the dinner menu, you can order the Mother Khinkali which is a giant dumpling encompassing a number of smaller dumplings. It’s a Tik Toker’s dream.

THE DISH: I was less interested in the photo op so, I just ordered three (for a great deal of $10 at lunch) of the Khinkali. Amazingly, this might have been the first time I ever tried these popular Georgian dumplings. At the very least, it was the most memorable experience. These are not your typical dumplings as they are large, wrinkly masterpieces with a smooth succulent dough and a spiced brothy filling. After a lesson from the waitress to hold these from the knob and carefully bite into the dough to get to the broth, I had a super fun, interactive meal. You can choose from cheese, lamb, beef, or beef and pork for your filling. My choice was beef and pork which was a delicately spiced meatball surrounding the broth. They were fantastic. Just like when I first discovered Khachapuri, I want to share this with everybody who has never had them. Georgian cuisine is full of exciting discoveries. Price: $10-$20
