DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: House Made Chicken Nuggets at KRUPA GROCERY

I’m not sure I really understand the difference between a finger and a nugget when it comes to chicken. The birds, of course, don’t have either. I’m sure the difference comes from the shape of the fritter.

It wasn’t until I was ordering the house made versions at the local favorite Krupa Grocery that I realized how rare it is to actually come across a chicken nugget nowadays. Unless you are at some god-awful giant fast food chain, you are pretty much stuck with fingers.

The novelty was part of the reason I ordered these.

But they were good and worked on both the nostalgic and culinary levels.

Four large patties of minced chicken were breaded and fried to a dark golden. The juicy chicken was soft and reminded me why I loved nugs as a child. Instead of barbecue or honey mustard, Kruppa smartly serves honey, which ties these to Southern fried chicken, which is I’m sure where nuggets first got their start.

While chicken fingers or tenders are everywhere, you may have to travel to Windsor Terrace to get a good old fashioned nugget made “the right way.” Price: $12
