I often visit one of Lady Wong’s two locations to pick up a sweet sensation known as kuih, the bite-sized Singaporean treats usually made from rice flour and anything from brown sugar to pandan to coconut milk.
They are a nice treat which I will write about on this blog one day, no doubt. But while I was waiting to place my order at the East Village location, I noticed a tray of samples full of thin red crackers. Not one to pass up free samples, I took a bite. And then immediately found myself craving a handful. So I picked up a bag of these chips to enjoy at home. I should have picked up two bags.
These are a brand of tempeh chips that Lady Wong produces that both supports Indonesian farmers and gives New Yorkers the next craveable treat
I lucked out with the spicy flavor, which features a nice potent mix of chili powder and secret spicy seasoning. The spice lights a fire in your mouth for a second or two before dissipating and making you want to immediately ride again.
The tempeh chips have a light nutty crunchy bite, similar to rice crackers, but these have a lot more nutrients (so they’re healthy) and are also seasoned with shiitake mushroom extract for a hit of umami.
I did not think I would be writing about a bag of chips anytime soon on this site, especially now that we are all back to eating out like the old days. But if I have these at home, I’m happy to stay home. Price: $3.88
