DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Slutty Fries at SLUTTY VEGAN

This corner space in Fort Greene right outside the subway space is prime real estate. Pretty awesome and amazing that it now hosts its second hip vegan fast food chain.

I do miss Broccoli Bar quite a bit, but no doubt the Atlanta-based Slutty Vegan has garnered more of a cult following with Tik Tok videos and long lines. Their claim to fame are the giant messy vegan burgers and the party atmosphere that their shouting employees provide.

On a late weekend afternoon, I didn’t encounter too much hullabaloo, but I was able to try one of their monster burgers. I’m generally not a huge fan of the fake meat fast food. I’m all for vegan dishes, but the laboratory meat that is designed to imitate terribly unhealthy food just doesn’t excite me. If I’m going to eat that unhealthy, I’ll personally just do the real thing.

But accompanying the burger was an order of fries that did get me excited. Of course, fried potatoes are usually naturally vegan. So in actuality these fries could have come from just about everywhere, but they were nostalgic, well-spiced and endlessly addicting

I didn’t snap a photo of these fries until I went through part of the container because I didn’t expect them to be the star of the show.

The crinkle cut spuds were crispy and tender with a coating of what they call “slut dust”, a secret blend of spices. It definitely has some paprika, turmeric, garlic and mustard powder, along with a sweet kiss of sugar. It’s an addicting blend that probably would make anything come to crackling life. But in this case, thankfully, only plants came to life. Slutty plants. Price: $3
