DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Gnudi at SAN GENNARO

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I was naive to think I couldn’t find another incredible dish to write about up in the Italian enclave of Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. I used to give food tours up in this neighborhood and still visit it regularly before bringing my son to the Bronx Zoo.

But as many times as I have visited, I’ve not tried every single restaurant or food purveyor. I’d say I’ve tried most but not all of them. Case in point: San Gennaro

San Gennaro is a little restaurant hidden in plain sight a stone’s throw away from stalwarts Mario’s and Dominick’s. This place has a bit more of an upscale European vibe than others on the block. And we finally decided to try somewhere new.

Everything was great but I was especially taken with their homemade pasta including a dish I do not find very often that is also not exactly pasta.

Gnudi (pronounced without the g) is related to gnocchi but is made with ricotta cheese instead of potatoes. They don’t have any pasta wrapped around them – hence the term gnudi (or naked). These little finger-sized dumplings are bathed in a decadent cream sauce with mushrooms and garnished with ultra-crispy and salty prosciutto.

This delicate homemade treat had a subtle flavor of fresh flour and cheese that picked up all the luxurious flavors surrounding it.

One more pick up in Arthur Avenue. I can’t wait to find more and more. Price: $24
