DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Spicy Shrimp Enchilado Taco at LOS MARISCOS

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Many people who seek out good food in NYC have heard about (and usually waited in line for) the excellent tacos from the uber-popular Los Tacos No. 1. I included the series of taco stands on my list of Best NYC Restaurants of the Decade. They deservedly get a lot of love.

But not as many people realize they also have a solo fish taco stand on the side of Chelsea Market. It’s by no means under the radar, but they have never expanded the seafood concept like they have with Los Tacos No, 1 and it seems like less people know about it.

I fell in love with their ceviche when they first opened back in 2016 and recently found myself wanting a quick bite in the neighborhood and I thought a fish taco seemed like a no-brainer.

And I really had forgotten how good this place is.

The enchilado tacos do not refer to an enchilada but rather a preparation of simmering shrimp in a spicy tomato sauce.

The shrimp are not battered and fried but naked and plump. They are meaty and you really get the flavor of the crustacean rather than an overly greasy breading. Pleasant spice notes come out and they are enhanced by the Baja toppings of guacamole, pico de Gallo, and a spicy mayo.

A squirt of lime and you could easily transport yourself right out of the big urban jungle to a beach in Mexico or Southern California.

So while everybody is lining up for the beef and pork at Los Tacos No. 1, I want to make sure nobody forgets that the same folks are working similar magic with food from the sea. Price: $5.25
