DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Italian Ices at COURT PASTRY SHOP

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I may have felt the most “normal” this past week than I have in six months. As many of you know, I work as a food tour guide in New York City. And I finally gave my first in person tour in Brooklyn since March.

It went so well. And really, aside from the masks and a good number of tragically shuttered businesses, things felt mostly like they had before.

Our Brownstone Brooklyn tour really showcases that and emphasizes the need to support the local businesses who are still struggling during this time.

One of the traditions that is thankfully still happening (at least while the weather remains moderate) is that the iconic Court Pastry Shop (they’ve been here since 1948) opens up their window and sells Italian ices to the neighborhood.

With apologies to the Lemon Ice King of Corona, these might be the best Italian ices in the outer boroughs. And definitely in Brooklyn.

These are old school – icy but firm with a tease of creaminess. The classic is probably Lemon followed by Cherry and Chocolate. When they have Honeydew or Pineapple, I like to get those. This week I relived the classic combination of Custard and Chocolate.

Served in a paper cup that practically disintegrates by the time you suck the refreshing sweet down, it doesn’t get more Brooklyn than these. And the fact that they are going strong is a sure sign that Brooklyn and New York (and maybe me) are on their way to some sort of normalcy.  Price: $2.50
