BEC DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: B + B at COURT STREET GROCERS

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

There was a time in the last decade when I was really dedicated to finding the most iconic dishes in New York City. I made a web series all about it and continued to re-invent this blog to search for a different dish that New Yorker’s call their own.

Life happened and other interests and projects took precedent, so if you read this blog with any regularity, you probably noticed that I have been stuck on Pickles for the last few years.

That’s really unacceptable. And I was planning to make a change and begin an entirely new adventure searching for another iconic New York dish. And then COVID happened.

And since I don’t actually live within the five boroughs currently, finding my way in to the city to see if I can hunt down some iconic dishes from restaurants that may or may not be open was not really feasible. Especially since I have a three year old who is no longer in day care.

But before this all started, I had begun the new expedition in my mind and tried one version of my next planned food adventure. It was the iconic Bacon, Egg, and Cheese sandwich, commonly known as a BEC.

People outside of New York might not understand how iconic that is. But you can (and should) get them from every corner bodega in the city. They are filling and delicious. They also have penetrated their way into every hip brunch spot from here to Brooklyn. So BECs were my next adventure.

For my first official BEC outing, I went to one of my favorite breakfasty lunchy sandwich spots. I’ve written about the different locations of Court Street Grocers many times over on this blog. Their sandwiches are killer. And of course, their BEC (or B + B) is no exception.

Butter and salt are the overwhelming flavors here. The chewy ciabatta roll is full of butter, which adds richness to the sharp cabot cheddar and incredibly fluffy eggs. Thick cuts of salty bacon provide more fat, salt, and a hint of sweetness. For health and a touch of bitterness, there are some arugula leaves to hold it all together.

It would be a very nice way to start your experience with BECs and when things settle down soon and I am able to find myself in the city regularly at breakfast (or brunch) time, it will be only the beginning for me (and you dear readers). Price: $8.96
