DISH OF THE WEEK: Detox Brew from TWEEFONTEIN HERB FARM at UNION SQUARE GREEMARKET

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

I love to walk through the Union Square Market despite the weekend crowds that have returned. But I usually pick up a few bits of produce and maybe some chips or pretzels. It is rare that I take advantage of the free samples being doled out at some of the stands.

But something (perhaps the oppressive heat) called my name to the coolers of tea samples being handed out at the crowded Tweefontein Herb Farm stand.

I wasn’t so familiar with this kiosk, but upon some research they are located in New Paltz (one of my favorite upstate towns) and have been around since the 80’s. I’ll tell you it’s easier to miss so many of the wonderful things at the Union Square Greenmarket. I’m glad I finally discovered them.

I sampled through a few of their drinks – mostly because I was so thirsty and needed a bit of refreshment. I would have felt bad sampling and not purchasing anything so I gave it my all to see if I liked anything. And I didn’t like anything. I loved something!

The Detox Brew, which is usually available as a tea blend, in a bottle, or in a to-go cup, was a sweet seductive blend of ginger, dandelion, catnip, and nettle. It had a hint of herbal vinegary notes, but the spicy ginger balanced by maple syrup really took center stage. I didn’t even know I had ailments, but this elixir cured me of more than just thirst. I’ll be sure to add Tweefontein to my regular Union Square rotation.
