BRIAN’S 100 BEST ’19: HAK ROLL at HAK BOX

I’m counting down the 100 best dishes I tasted in 2019…

This was the year of cheung fun (or Chinese rice rolls).in New York. A famous Flushing spot moved to Manhattan, a famous Hong Kong chain came to Chinatown, and lots of other little places start advertising the dish that has been around for a few years in this city but only now started gaining popularity outside of the Chinese community. My favorite was a variation on it at new hole-in-the-wall Hak Box. This roll features more firm rice noodles that are layered and cooked with salty bits of pork and scallions. With a sweet soy sauce on top, it’s an affordable and tasty snack. And it’s cool too.   Price: $2.50
