BEC DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Milk Bun BEC at WIN SON BAKERY

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Wow! I’m getting predictable. I just checked to see what my final Dish of the Week from last year was and turns out 2018 Brian Hoffman had the same thoughts as the present day one.

Last year I wrote about an incredible egg sandwich found at an undersung coffee shop in Brooklyn. And I saved it for the final spot because I thought eggs (symbolic of a new life) were a great thing to write about as we enter a new year.

Well guess what I tasted a few weeks back and saved until this week? Another incredible egg sandwich from a Brooklyn breakfast spot.

Win Son Bakery is not nearly as under-the-radar as Southside Coffee from last year. Along with their sit down Taiwanese restaurant Win Son across the street, the bakery has received lots of press, Instagram love, and hour long waits.

I was fortunate to miss the crowds later on a slow holiday weekend. In fact, I finally got to try some of the Taiwanese dishes at Win Son and then stopped in here for a doughnut and this breakfast sandwich.

The menu calls it a Milk Bun BEC (Bacon Egg and Cheese) due to the Taiwanese fluffy bun that is freshly baked and serves as the vehicle for the rest of the ingredients. However the menu also gives the option of trading in the bun for a scallion pancake. Everyone who has written about this in the past seems to take the bait.

I’m sure a scallion pancake would be a great (and unique) pairing, but the menu calls it a Milk Bun BEC and I figured I had to see why.

Boy, am I glad I stuck to the original plan. The bun was warm, soft, and a light topping for the remainder of the components. And everything else was awesome. A perfectly folded egg paired with thick cut and smoky bacon, rich raclette cheese, and a ginger deluxe sauce that was somewhere between Thousand Island dressing and ginger compote. Bright, tangy, smoky, sweet, this sandwich literally had everything going for it.

And that’s what I wish for all of you in the New Year. That and a few more of these incredible BEC’s. Price: $9
