Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
My photos have never been the best food photos on the internet. I can admit that. Hopefully they give a sense of what the food looks like and my brilliant prose more than makes up for the lesser quality.
Well, this week I have no photo from my own phone, I’m afraid. My phone was stolen and it took me close to three weeks to replace it.
The biggest tragedy of all of this is that I had some very important (but not that great) food photos on my phone that were not backed up. That included of a brilliant meal at Crown Shy, one of the most ambitious restaurants to open this year.
Inside a Financial District Art Deco residential building is the unlikely location of this new hot spot and when you step inside the restaurant doors, you are transported to a classy casual place for people in the know to be greeted with incredible food.
I wish I could share photos of the soft and warm complimentary olive bread that was somewhere between a popover and a sweet loaf with dehydrated black olives crusted on top. Or the crunchy fried cauliflower in a gluten-free breading balanced with sherry vinegar and salty parmesan. Or those dreamy charred carrots floating in a creamy foam with plump razor clams.
Those dishes were all ones I would go back for and maybe one day will obtain photos for my collection. My favorite dish however was a big splurge at $51 and one I am not ordering again just for the photo. So I had to borrow the photo below from elsewhere on the internet.

The short ribs far exceeded any expectation I might have had. Smoky and soft, the perfectly sliced pieces revealed beautifully marbled beef. They were like meat butter. But to take things even further, they were served with a light and flavorful bowl of quinoa, a complex chimichurri sauce, and a brilliant dish of whipped horseradish potatoes occupied by the burnt ends.
The good news is I finally got a new phone and it is an upgraded model, which means better camera, which might just mean better photos. After all these years. Stay tuned. Price: $59
