Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
It’s NYC Beer Week and there have been loads of sudsy, intoxicating events over the last few days. I was fortunate to attend one such event – the Opening Night festivities at Grand Central Station. Beers were poured from many of the local NYC breweries and you can bet I tasted as many as possible.
I had to be mindful because I was in fact working (at the Urban Oyster booth promoting our newest tour – an awesome tour by bus that takes people to an alternating 4 of the 14 local operating breweries). Fortunately, part of my job is tasting lots of beer. And I was most excited to sample beers from the local breweries that have just started producing – places like Brooklyn’s Other Half and Bronx’s Gun Hill Brewing.
Finback Brewery has finally started producing beer in their large space in the middle of residental Glendale, Queens. I’ve seen the space (which is not yet open to the public) and met the brewers Basil and Kevin way before I tasted their beer. I’m excited that we’re going to be featuring them on our new tour.
I’m also excited that the first beer I tasted from them is phenomenal. The Double Sess is a very refreshing wheat beer that is infused with Szechuan peppercorns and ginger. It’s similar to Singlecut’s Olympic White Lagrrr, but less aggressive and much smoother. Each sip was flavorful, crisp, and had an easy mouthfeel.
Normally when you see the word Double in front of a beer style, it means a stronger and more intense version of that style. But a sess (session) is a beer you can drink lots of in one session. So a double sess is one you can drink lots of on a very intense level. And this one I could drink all day long during every day of Beer Week (which unfortunately comes to an official close on Sunday).
