DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Fried Clam Strips at SEA WOLF

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

While my friends were eating burgers or grilled cheese sandwich, I order the clam strips. This wasn’t on a boardwalk in the northeast but rather at a greasy Greek diner in the suburbs of South Florida. Probably not the place to order fried clams, but that just shows my adventurous appetite.

Once I got older and more travelled, I discovered at shacks in New England the real deal fried clams. Those would be the whole belly ones – lightly breaded and fatty with a briny kick.

Sea Wolf in Bushwick is a hipster bar and restaurant that embraces local summery seafood with a vibe that lives somewhere between one of those seafood shacks in New England and a crowded fishing-themed pub in South Florida.

And it’s here that I found something that married my chewy clams of yesteryear and the real good stuff.

Breaded aggressively but not overly greasy, these strips were too easy to eat. Each bite was chewy and meaty with just a hint of saline. Lemon and herbs lightens up the grease a bit. And of course, they were served with the only possible dipping sauce for this abundant appetizer: tartare.

My friends might have mocked me back in the day for eating something other than what is expected at a 24-hour diner in the suburbs, but look at me now!! Price: $12
