The Place: Bub’s Bakery, a completely gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free bakery, recently opened amongst all the other hip trendy food places in Noho. It’s right around the corner from This Bowl and across the street from locations of Los Tacos No. 1 and Levain Bakery. It fits right in with this line-up, featuring expensive pastries that are more than what they seem. As mentioned, everything here is allergy free.
The Menu: Eaters who suffer from allergies can rejoice (and will when they see these offerings). My wife is gluten-free and she was in heaven marveling over the cookies, cupcakes, pies, and puddings. There are also sandwiches and bagels. While everything is displayed very nicely, they are accompanied by a long description of the ingredients inside. I totally get it and know how important this is for allergy sufferers, but at the same time, I couldn’t help but be slightly put off to see how many ingredients (including something called glucono delta-lactone) were in the cinnamon roll.

The Dish: But I forgot all about things like powdered cellulose when I took my first bite of A Big Cinnamon Roll. Cinnamon rolls are all the rage right now and this one is one to not overlook in the search for the city’s best. It didn’t hide the fact that it was without gluten, but instead featured a caramelized crunchy exterior and layers of moist “pastry”. Nothing, including the restrained frosting, was too sweet. Cinnamon was present throughout and the crunchy texture continued layer after layer. I hope Bub’s gets notoriety not only within the allergen community, but within the food community at large. If all the pastries are as good as the cinnamon roll, then everybody needs to try this place! Price: $9.50
