Tacos are hot again. Like really hot. Santo Taco, which took over the iconic La Esquina take out window this past summer, has already expanded further uptown. And it’s not the only taqueria in the city garnering lots of attention. I’ve tried quite a few of the new ones (more reviews to come) and I have to say the Steak Trompo at Santo Taco was probably the best one I’ve had in a long long time.

This peppery, perfectly seasoned sirloin is cooked on a spinning rotisserie (think al pastor or shawarma) and then sliced impeccably thin. No scattered bits of meat here – just a long super thin steak. Crisp and charred, but also chewy and tender, the textures here are out of control. Flavorwise, we got big beefy salty notes and it doesn’t feel fatty or unctuous despite the healthy marbling. If you only try one of the new taco spots, I have to say this is the place. Price: $6.95
