THE PLACE: Dame has been top of my list since they first started previewing their now famous fish and chips during the peak of the pandemic. Since then, this cozy Greenwich Village haunt not only continues to be a hot table in the city but also has become a reliable old standby.
THE MENU: British Seafood is the focus here for Ed Szymanski’s first restaurant in the neighborhood. Since then, he and his partner Patricia Howard have also debuted Lord’s, following typical British pub meat-heavy dishes and an ode to southern French food at Crevette. But at Dame, the fish and chips, kedgeree, and poached cod with English peas are the perennial favorites, along with fresh oysters and some creative smaller plates to start.

THE DISH: I stopped by for what they might call a pintxo in Northern Spain, but identify as a skewer in both the US and the UK. The Squid & Scallion Skewers were two generous sticks of a surprising duo. The charred tentacles were crispy and chewy and brightened by the tang of the green onions – both ingredients were drizzled with green herbal parsley oil. This would be a great intro to the seafood here or works perfectly for a few tremendous bites to pair with an aperitif or glass of wine. Price: $14
