DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: Brooklyn Transplant at SHELSKY’S OF BROOKLYN

Peter Shelsky, the man behind the appetizing revolution in Brooklyn, moved to Paris with his family during the pandemic. His staff is keeping the shop running without missing a beat and everything is always great. However, it’s always nice to catch Peter himself in the store from time to time when he comes back every few months to check on things.

When he was back in town recently, he went on an Instagram spree, posting photos of all of his classic sandwiches. Of course, I found myself scrolling and drooling, so on my next visit, I had to try a sandwich that I had never tasted before.

For this visit, it was the Brooklyn Transplant. And I can’t believe I have been missing this masterpiece all these years.

While Shelsky’s is known for their bagel sandwiches, this was served on beautiful slices of dark rye bread.

Between the bread you find a brilliant mix of kippered salmon, pickled herring salad, cream cheese, and apple horseradish.

I happen to be a fan of pickled herring, but even if you’re not, it blends in beautifully with the other ingredients and adds a nice bite of vinegar to the rich cream cheese and smoky Nova. The apple horseradish was also a prime example of balance with its sweet heat.

If you always stick to your usual sandwiches here, I urge you to try something new like the Brooklyn Transplant. Thanks again to Peter for coming into town and setting us straight with his seductive Instagram food porn. Price: $17.99
