Once our taxi pulled up to the beachfront shack full of locals, we knew we had found the right place.
We spent a week in the Colombian city of Cartagena, right on the Caribbean Sea. We saw fortresses, gorgeous beaches, plenty of churches, and lots of food vendors.
Just like Lima, there are some fancy high-end restaurants in the town, but the best thing we tried came from this little beach-front joint owned by and named for a famous Colombian boxer.
We had some tasty fried fish with patacones, a couple of fresh juices, and a Colombian play on creamy risotto with all the treasures of the sea.
Arroz Cremoso is like a rich rice casserole. In this case, it had lots of bits of the tastiest ocean morsels, from mussels to crab to charred shrimp, both mixed into the rice base and garnished on top.
The rice is creamy and cheesy with big briny sweet sea flavor. There are also some crunchy shreds on top for texture.
This dish was an impulse order and outshone anything else we ate that day. The fried fish, which this Kiosco is known for, was simple and light, but this had such big flavors and technique. I wish all our taxis would have taken us here.
