Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
You really would have no idea the incredible and unique desserts waiting inside for you at Kabisera, The storefront looks like an old fashioned coffee shop that has been there for years. No fancy white panels or neon cursive signs.
Hopefully, you choose to go inside and have a look around because this place is a gem.
Specializing in Filipino desserts (that you probably have never heard of), this is the kind of place you want to hang out at everyday and work your way through their entire menu. I know I do.
Desserts are the draw, but this is a full-on café with serious coffee and a lunch menu of hearty Filipino staples.
As mentioned, I am dying to return to familiarize myself with the entire repertoire, but I was seduced by the block of purple goodness known as Biko.
The purple comes from purple potato known as ube that bulks up this sticky bar made from glutinous rice. The mass is cooked in coconut milk and brown sugar wrapped in a banana leaf before being topped with sweet roasted coconut flakes.
It’s a bit chewy like mochi with a rich coconut flavor mellowed by the starchiness of the tuber.
I had never had a dessert quite like this and it showed that Kabisera is more than just a laid-back local café. It’s a serious Filipino foodie destination. And they really don’t make places like this anymore. Very happy to have it in the neighborhood. Price: $6
