Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City
It’s been a bit of a roller coaster with one of my favorite local roasters. And I’m not referring to the buzz and crash you get from their roasted beans.
Early on in the pandemic, it was announced that Brooklyn Roasting Company was filing for bankruptcy and would be closing their retail shops. This broke my heart. Not only because I love their coffee, but because they were an integral part of the Brooklyn food scene. And I would often bring tours by so knew many of the owners and employees.
Recently I was in the neighborhood of Dumbo and was confused and surprised at seeing one of their small storefronts still open and selling coffee.
Turns out the articles I read didn’t tell the whole story. They did in fact close most of their shops, but two still live on. I was elated to see an old friend and down a cup of cold brew.
I also spent a little more time thinking about how I could support them so I bought some merchandise items I might not have noticed in the past.
And that’s how I discovered the wonderful weird world of coffee peanut butter.
Brooklyn Roasting Company makes two different peanut butters that are infused with coffee beans from different regions. There is the Ethiopia and Sumatra.
I picked the Ethiopian blend but after devouring the entire jar, I am eager to find my way back to Brooklyn to get my Sumatra fix.
You might think peanut butter and coffee do not belong together, but you would be wrong. Think about getting two scoops of ice cream on top of each other: one coffee, one peanut butter. Not so bad, right?
And when you realize that certain beans, like the Ethiopian ones, have fruity blueberry notes and provide not just a roasty cocoa flavor but also an acidic fruitiness, you remember peanut butter and jelly doesn’t sound good on paper, but it is a miracle combination.
I really can not tell you how incredible this peanut butter is. It’s sweet, crunchy, toasty, fruity, nutty, and unbelievably delicious. I am so happy Brooklyn Roasting Company hasn’t fully disappeared and I’m (mostly) happy they have turned me on to a brand new addiction. Price: $9-$18
