DISH OF THE WEEK: Sponge Cakes at SPONGIES CAFE

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Oh New York! I love these stories where the owner of a specific food spot is not what you’d expect. For example, the owners of one of the best bagel shops in the city are from Thailand, but were trained at a typical Jewish bagel shop.

The same kind of story holds true at the new Spongies Cafe, This little shop specializes in Hong Kong style paper wrapped sponge cakes. Right across the street is Kam Hing, which has been making these for a long time.

And that’s where Fernando, the owner of the new spot, learned the ropes. Fernando is not Chinese, but from Latin America. Regardless, he and his team make some amazing sponge cakes.

I recently picked up three for just a few dollars and in a variety of flavors. I realized I should have snapped my photos with the paper wrapping still on since that is part of the signature here, but I couldn’t wait to get my hands on them.

The cakes are incredibly light and fluffy with a moist center. Think somewhere between a muffin, soufflé, and angel food cake. That’s what these ethereal baked goods can best be compared to.

I brought these home to enjoy with me son and we agreed that our favorite was the chocolate chip studded one.

But I also really liked the nutty sweetness of the black sesame. And the unique subtle bite of Thai Tea flavor.

These are so delicious and I’m not sure the proper time to eat them, but it’s easy for me to crave them at breakfast or as a dessert. Or in the middle of the day. Or really whenever. Price: 3 for $2
