DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK: Gnocchi Rosa at LILLO CUCINA ITALIANA

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Wow! My habits have certainly changed during the pandemic.

There have been many restaurants on my list from the old days. And I would slowly make my way to them, but new restaurants would pop up and like the trendsetter I am, I would more often find myself at the hot new spot.

I also would scour the web to find the most iconic dish at a restaurant to make sure I was not ordering incorrectly. I felt like I only got one shot since there were so many restaurants on my list.

Well, I recently found myself in Brooklyn and finally stopped by a little place that had been on that aforementioned list for a long time. It’s a tiny little Italian spot that has rave reviews but doesn’t get all the buzz as other nearby hotspots. And when I arrived, I hadn’t done my research but rather chose a menu item that sounded the most tempting to me. Imagine that!

I really wish I had eaten at Lillo Cucina Italiana before COVID when the intimate setting and friendly chef/owner would be something I could have savored. Now I had a brief interaction with the owner, waited outside for my food, and then ate this incredible Italian gnocchi dish from a plastic container on a street corner.

I could still somehow comprehend all the things that make Lillo special without actually dining in.

The gnocchi rosa was a fascinating discovery for me. The pillowy potato gnocchi had been infused with beets giving it both a dramatic color and a sweet earthy flavor. Those dreamy gnocchi bits floated in a buttery soup spiked with sage and parmesan.

It was absolutely amazing. It’s by far the best meal I’ve had these past 12 months and it was served in a take home plastic bowl. My, how times have changed!! Price: $14
