DISH OF THE WEEK: Breakfast Sandwich at BREAD & SPREAD

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

Before the pandemic, the plan was to dive deep into the world of breakfast sandwiches in New York, which is actually a very iconic way to start the day.

For most of my time living in the city, I took them for granted. That’s not to say I didn’t crave them pretty regularly, but it was just something I knew I could get just about anywhere.

Now for the last number of months, I’ve definitely made myself eggs, bacon, and cheese sandwiches. But there was always something missing.

When I found myself in Dumbo at an hour before noon, I knew I had to fill this craving and Bread & Spread was just the place to do it.

We used to visit them on our Dumbo tour in partnership with the New York Times and I know their chef-crafted sandwich combinations are some of the best (and under-rated) in the entire city.

The breakfast sandwiches are available all day (as they should be) and are highly customizable. I went with their chewy ciabatta bread, bacon, Cheddar cheese, and I left the sauce up to the cashier, who smartly chose the chipotle mayo.

The fried egg had that crispness with the correct level of grease, rounded out by the deeply smoky bacon, the sharpness from the cheddar, and a creamy bite thanks to that sauce.

It’s all those things I came close to re-creating at home, but truly nobody makes these sandwiches like New York sandwich joints. I know it sounds crazy and so simple, but you can’t understand until you understand the New York breakfast sandwich. Price: $6
