Beer DISH OF THE WEEK

DISH OF THE WEEK in New York: You Should’ve Seen This Coming from NON SEQUITUR BEER

SADLY, NON SEQUITUR BEER IS NOW CLOSED.

Something happened even before this pandemic. Perhaps it’s because I have a young child or I just got too busy. Or something. But I lost my handle on the emerging breweries in New York City. I used to be able to name all of them, but in the last year or so, the openings took off.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a good thing. The more breweries, the better. But I feel like my expertise has slightly slipped.

A few months ago, I listened to a podcast that featured many of the owners of the new breweries of the last year. I made some notes and have done what I can to seek out some of their beers.

Non Sequitur is one of the more exciting ones. Like many of these new breweries, they don’t yet have a physical space. They contract with other brewery facilities to make their beers. But then the exciting part with them is they use bars as a pop-up taproom.

So if we weren’t living in such crazy times, I could at some point visit their “tasting room” and chat with the folks behind the brewery. They have been doing regular pop-ups at the new Keg & Lantern location in Red Hook.

But I was thankful to find a can of their beer before lockdown and I enjoyed it recently. And I really did enjoy it.

I’m not sure what the name of the beer – You Should’ve Seen This Coming – refers to but it feels somewhat prophetic. I feel like the “this” in the name is the pandemic and it means I should have stocked up and bought even more of these beers.

More likely it means you should have seen it coming that this brewery would make a New England style IPA since it is a very popular style and everybody seems to be doing it.

And this version is a very solid version.

It pours hazy and creamy with wonderful fresh piney notes. The palate is very pleasant with a lingering grapefruit finish and an adequate amount of hop bitterness. The blend of Citra and Nelson Sauvin is masterful and restrained.

I wish I had picked up a few more beers of brand new breweries like Non Sequitur and Talea Beer Co. before this pandemic because they are harder to find at my local store. Regardless, I’m happy to know that when we get back out there in the world there is a new roster of local breweries to discover.

Is Non Sequitur Beer Project’s You Should’ve Seen This Coming? the best beer in NY? It earns an  out of 10 for being a very solid and drinkable NE IPA. Beautiful on the nose and very easy on the tastebuds.
