DISH OF THE WEEK: Hanoi Egg Coffee at HANOI SOUP SHOP

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

There is a famous drink many old-school New Yorkers know well called an Egg Cream. The funny story about the drink is that it doesn’t contain egg and it doesn’t contain cream.

The less familiar Egg Coffee is not such a misnomer. It is exactly as it sounds with both coffee and egg. And it tastes better than you might imagine.

Hanoi Soup Shop is the new little sister counter restaurant to Hanoi House. They specialize in papaya salads and noodle soups. But don’t overlook the drink menu.

That’s where you find one of Hanoi’s famous concoctions. A cup of strong black Vietnamese coffee is garnished with what looks like thick whipped cream but is something else. A meringue-like froth composed of sweetened whipped egg yolks provides a milky experience that begins to melt and incorporate into the hot coffee. This is one coffee you have to consume with a spoon.

This is the perfect after-meal drink. It sits somewhere between a dessert and a pick-me-up beverage. Think a Vietnamese affogato.

New Yorkers know egg creams, now it’s time to get to know the egg coffee. Price: $8
