DISH OF THE WEEK: As Cool As You Please by Pink Boots Society at BIG ALICE BREWING COMPANY

Every week, I document another dish that impressed and satiated me during my food adventures around New York City

The craft beer world looks different than you might imagine. While there is some truth to the hipster brewer with a curlicue moustache, there are more women behind the bars at tap rooms and in the brew house wearing rubber boots than you might realize. And they have no moustaches at all.

Pink Boots Society is an amazing organization that showcases and supports the women in the brewing industry. And every so often, they create a delicious beer for us guys (and girls) to drink.

The latest one was made at Big Alice and by many of the ladies that work at the Queens brewery (which now has a giant barrel-aging facility and tap room in Industry City). It was at the original Long Island City brewery where I got to taste the As Cool As You Please.

The can was released on International Women’s Day (April 5) and proceeds go back to the Pink Boots Society.

The 7.8% beer pours peach and golden and has lots of big floral notes on the nose. It’s a double IPA but is not nearly as bold and aggressive as you might expect. They add both a special hop blend created by the Pink Boots and Mugwort tea. It’s a fresh complex and absolutely delicious brew.

Mugwort is one of the original flavorings for beer before hops became king. And this is very fitting because women (or alewives) were the original brewers of beer. I’m super happy that history is starting to repeat itself. Price: $9 (solo) /$20 (4 pack)
